The Persona Weather App for iOS brings you right into the Shadow World

Persona Weather App iOS

There isn’t much to say about most weather apps. They either do their job or they don’t. We can go on and on pretending it matters how things look when all we really need is functionality. We can probably be convinced to pay a little more for a weather app that has those retina visuals or has been upgraded for iPhone 5 screens.. sure.. but by-and-large no one cares. We look at it for a total of 30 seconds a day; once when we get up, another right before lunch if you don’t sit near a window, and once more before you head to sleep. That’s it. Absolutely no one cares about Weather Apps.

Until now.

If you’re a fan of Atlus and a fan of the highly-praised Persona series, this is the App you’ve been wishing for. The app utilizes not only high res background images, character, and art assets but also treats you to tunes and sound bytes from Persona 3, Persona 4 and Persona 4 Arena. In fact, looking at some of these screens on the iPhone will make you pine for the series to make their debut on the iOS.

Now let’s talk about the App.

The View

The layout of the screen closely mimics the character interaction scenes from the Persona 4 series and includes the infamous weather HUD at the top right corner of the screen. The HUD includes the time, date, day of the week, time of day, and current weather conditions. There are still some bugs in the App which include either taking too long to fetch weather data or not being able to properly fetch the current weather conditions at all. An otherwise crippling issue for most weather apps, but for reasons any Persona fan can tell you, it’s something we’re all willing to overlook. When the App can’t draw data, the familiar weather patterns will be replaced with an abrupt exclamation point. What is this? Metal Gear Solid? “!”

The Characters

You’ll be treated to character specific interaction the minute you open the app. Your character will say one character specific opening phrase as the App draws weather data, a sound byte, and finally a description of your current weather outlook all delivered in character. It goes without saying that the creator of the App knows and loves the source material.

The Settings

You are treated to a myriad of settings which include toggling backgrounds, music, or sound. From the settings menu you can also choose specific sets of characters to appear. The app really is charming with how it presents it’s material, and I would say it’s pretty comforting and gives you the experience you’d want if you were to build it yourself. The choices in background music is a soothing bonus to the one-liners your favorite character greet you with when you open the app. Why haven’t more weather apps tried to incorporate music? Oh.. but sorry guys, there’s no All Kanji mode.

The Controls

The current version allows you to swipe down to unveil a map of your current location, with fog gently rolling in. Swipe from left to right to open the S. Link section, which shows you how many times you’ve interacted with the characters in the App. Double tapping on your screen will unveil the weekly forecast, and within that panel you can tap on any of the days to get more information about the predicted highs and lows. Swipe upwards to open up the Persona Weather Game Center Achievement list. There are no achievements available yet, but you should probably give the App 5 stars to thank the guy for his hard work.

Overall

This is an amazing app that offers a lot, and asks for so little. The amount of care and craft into the project is evident from the moment you open the App until you regrettably have to close it because you need to go on with your day. The speed the App grabs weather data could probably be improved and the bug resulting in weather data occasionally not even being served  are things we have full trust in Monkey Initiatives handling in the future. From what we gather, it’s largely a solo effort, so we definitely can cut him some slack about that.

The App is currently free on iTunes, so grab it before the fog rolls in.

In 2001 a crack commando Editor-in-Chief was sent to prison by a military court for a crime he didn't commit. He promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the New York City underground. Today, still wanted by the government, he survives as a Japanese Entertainment Expert. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find him, maybe you can hire the J. Team.
